5 Home DIY Tips to Help Save Money
When it comes to do-it-yourself projects or money-saving tips, there are a few things to keep in mind like estimating the costs. Look for inspiration through magazines, television shows and internet sears. By all means, have fun with it. If you are planning to do some repair work on your own, the chore may come across as just that – a chore. However, think of the sheer satisfaction achieved knowing you accomplished something with your own two hands. For the most part, DIY improvement projects and/or ideas are simply using creativity to beautify the home or finding ingenious ways to utilize ordinary household items. The following five tips listed below may just be the wow factor you need to spruce up your home while saving money in the process.
Aluminum Foil Usage
Instead of spending those bucks on dryer sheets, ball up a piece of aluminum foil and toss in the dryer along with your wet clothes. Not only will it remove static cling, you can use the ball of foil over and over again. To restore hard brown sugar to its former powdery self, place the sugar in a piece of foil and bake it in the oven at 300°F (150° C) for about five minutes. And when it comes time to polish the silver, just line a pan with a sheet of aluminum foil and fill it with cold water. After that, add two teaspoons of salt. Place your tarnished silverware into the solution, let it sit for two to three minutes, then rinse off and pat dry.
Bathroom Storage
Add another shower curtain rod behind your shower curtain. Hang “S” shaped curtain hooks and loop small inexpensive baskets over them. This is perfect for storing items such as: shampoos and conditioners, shower gels, loofah mitts, pumice stones, etc. Another idea is to use hanging tiered baskets or hang a cosmetic bag over the door to store items. For those of you with tiny bathrooms and an even smaller linen closet, try placing a small footstep ladder inside the bathroom or near its entrance. Stack your towels over the steps and place toiletries or some décor of your choice on the top.
Headboard Ideas
Want an eclectic idea for decorating your bedroom? Bedroom sets like any other pieces of furniture can be quite pricey. There are tons of substitutes that can be used for a headboard. Dare to be different by using such things as shutters, a hanging quilt, picture frames, screens or two single window panels to lean your mattress set against.
Vinegar
Investing in a large bottle of vinegar comes with loads of benefits. For instance, you can clean vinyl floors and windows by mixing ¼ cup of the solution with hot water. Vinegar also boosts cleaning power in laundry and dishes without leaving an odor. It’s also good to use as a spray in the fight against soap scum and mildew in the shower.
Fall Lawn Maintenance
Autumn leaves may be pretty to look at but they sure can bring on an exasperating sigh when they pile up on your lawn, especially for gardeners who take pride in their yard’s appearance or first time home owners. Use a mulching mower when mowing the grass for the last time before old man winter arrives. Rake the leaves regularly to keep the grass healthy. They can be shredded and used for compost. Pruning is vital so be sure to cut off any dead or diseased branches from trees and shrubs.
